An interview with reporter Seymour Hersh on the path he took to tell the story of the massacre at My Lai, in Vietnam, 47 years ago. He said no major newspaper would touch the story. He didn’t blame them. He said they just could not believe it really happened. And so he took a different route. It didn’t matter to him. He knew instinctively the story had to be told, and he was going to be the person to tell it because no one else would. This is the value of instinct; the instinct of a good writer; the instinct of a good reporter. It is not something that makes sense or fits a plan. It is knowing you are going to do something because it is right for you. It is right because it feels right. It’s that simple.
