WRLDs was an online project whose goal was to make the language of complex disciplines, such as science and finance more transparent. It did so by encouraging the participants in these fields to enter data in ways that created “social objects”, 3D virtual forms which could also be printed as objects. The hope was that this shift in the way data was viewed made it more accessible to the public and also created a necessary distance for the practitioners, allowing them to discover new information about their own practice. Objects were also generated by WRLDs to commemorate notable events in the field. They were a strange kind of trophy for impacting us all. These “Library Objects” were also intended as points of discussion for the public about the field being explored. The first project addressed the financial markets. Interestingly, the financial crisis occurred just after WRLDs launched.
