Note: In the images above, the William character is visually inspired by the face of Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman.

“Imagining an economy that is no longer abstract and can no longer be represented by numbers or ratios, came from another continent. It was where his business thrived. It came from William’s stoicism and eight year old Ana’s innocence.”

Objecthood is a visual story that creates a space to “imagine” an absurd economy. It turns our unspoken system of creating value upside down and opens a door which is never unlocked, but once it is opened, it cannot be forgotten

It takes place in a country where wealth must be stored as gold on utilitarian objects including kitchen tools and weighted clothing which is required to be worn in public. It is a modern society using an exhibition of wealth that can be found in non-western cultures thousands of years ago.

These odd representations of net worth shift the meaning of the owner’s accumulated wealth as the history of the objects become intertwined with the value of their portfolio.

The story is influenced by the Spanish cinema of the 1970’s, including Carlos Saura and Victor Erice, who relied upon often absurd but highly symbolic imagery to convey difficult and controversial content. It includes a collection of images that provide visual information bringing the story into the present; letting readers consider the components of a fictional economy that impact us today.

This project eventually became the book, Palindrome.
